Perlis State park

Gua Wang Burma
The Wang Burma Cave has unique and challenging chambers and shelters a large population of insects, bats, toads and other cave inhabitants. It is located north near the Bukit China Granite and tucked between Gua Kelam and the Perlis State Park. Wang Kelian Sunday market
Wang Kelian is popular market situated along the Thai Malaysian border. A myriad of goods such as handicrafts, tableware and clothing are available here. Visitors can visit the market without the use of passport, provided that they remain within the market area.

Kuala Perlis
The major ferry terminal for visitors departing for Langkawi is located at the mouth of the Perlis River. The major activity found here is fishing and many superb seafood restaurants can be found in this small fishing town.

Taman Herba
Adjacent to the Bukit Air Recreation Park, on 12ha of land is the Herb Garden. Opened in 1998, this ethno botanical museum now contains over 1,000 species of herbs, spices and other medicinal plants of local and foreign origin. Here, visitors can learn about their uses and how to care for such plants as well as purchase them.

Padang Besar
Located along the border, this bustling town is a shoppers’ paradise where one can choose from a wide variety of produce, handicrafts and clothing. It is also a major stopover along the rail route between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Chuping Sugar Cane Plantation
Named after Bukit Chuping, a limestone hill, the landscape here is dominated by 8,000ha of lush sugar cane plantations. The seemingly endless expanse of greenery is truly a sight to behold. Those intending to visit are required to obtain written permission from the perils sugar factory.

Snake and Reptile Farm

This majestic 96 year-old mosque is also known as Masjid Alwi. It features Islamic and Malay architecture, and was once the Perlis State Mosque.

Harumanis Plantation
Come the month of May this 64.6ha plantation in the Bukit Bintang Agriculture Centre will be flocked by mango lovers who come to purchase varieties of mangoes such as harumanis, mas indera, mas muda, chok anan and sala.

Kota Kayang Museum
The museum is situated close to what was historically a fortified area, which is marked by the mausoleums of two 16th century sultans of Kedah and the remnants of timbers that demarcated the burial sites. During the construction of the museum, several ancient artifacts dating back to at least 2,000 years were discovered.

Dato’ Wan Ahmad’s House
A multi-stratum roof, beautiful woodcarvings and colorful panels adorn this charming wooden village house. This 70-year old structure once belonged to the late Dato’ Wan Ahmad.

Travellers can shop for duty free items at Padang Besar or scours the local markets for interesting knick-knacks and handicraft items. Getting There
The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas, Kedah, receives daily flights from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). At the airport, taxis and buses to Perlis are available.
For those who prefer to drive, the state is accessible by road via the North-South Highway. Alternatively, travelers can take a bus or taxi from Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kedah. You can also catch a train from Kuala Lumpur, Alor Star, Haadyai, and Singapore to Arau and Padang Besar or take a ferry from Langkawi to Kuala Perlis.

Melaka – The Historical City, Malaysia

Ferries also ply between Melaka and Dumai in Sumatra. The Batu Berendam airfield also receives flights from Indonesia.

Perak - Places of Interest

Pangkor Island

Pangkor is a small island on the West coast of Malaysia largely inhabited by fishing communities scattered along its coast. This popular island offers visitors the unique opportunity to live near fisher folk and observe their lifestyle, savour seafood delicacies, or simply enjoy the sun, sea and sand at the numerous beaches along its beautiful coastline. Located nearby is the exclusive Pangkor Laut Island, noted for its world-renowned resort.

A 40 minute ferry ride from Lumur will take you the island. Then, you can rent bicycles and motorbikes to get around the place and do some sight-seeing. A large number of resorts have also sprung up to meet the boom of visitors.

Pangkor has its fair share of exotic flora and fauna. Watch out for majestic hornbills roosting on the treetops. Along the trails, you may find some rare orchids growing in abundance while monkeys swing among the trees. Butterflies will land on an outstretched palm. Royal Museum
Built as the royal residence in 1962, it was originally named Istana Kenangan. A unique wooden building constructed without the use of nails, the museum showcases Perak’s royal regalia as well as pictures and history of the royal family.

Pasir Salak Historical Complex
Located about 70km from Ipoh. Within the complez are memorials erected in honour of Malay warriors such as Dato’ Maharaja Lela, Dato’ Sagor and Si Puntum. Other interesting sights include Mr. Birch’s memorial monument, the burial site of Si Puntum, Dato’ Maharaja Lela’s fortress and the Lela Tentaka cannons used against the British army.

The Pasir Salak Historical Complex is actually located by the banks of the Perak River, and is often a venue for river-related activities, apart from being noted for its historical displays.

Kellie’s Castle
In 1915, William Kellie Smith, an English rubber planter commissioned the construction of this mansion which was never completed. It is believed that this mysterious mansion has hidden rooms and a secret tunnel. The road which leads to the Castle follows the contours of the land in dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the mystery and romance of the place. It is situated in the town of Batu Gajah and is about 20 minutes' drive from Ipoh, Perak. Kellie's Castle is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm daily, and admission is RM3.

Ipoh Railway Station and City Hall
The Ipoh Railway Station was completed in 1917 and features a mixture of Moorish and Victorian architecture. It has one of the best station hotels in the country known as the Majestic Hotel. Just across the station is the Dewan Bandaraya or City hall, a huge white neo-classical building.

Ubudiah Mosque
Kuala Kangsar’s crowning glory, the mosque was cConstruction for this magnificent structure began during the reign of Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I, the 28th Sultan of Perak. The mosque's golden dome and minarets are testaments of the beauty of the Islamic architecture. The mosque is located at Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar.

Galeri Sultan Azian Shah
It was formerly known as Istana Hulu, the state’s first gifts and awards presented to the ruler of perak, Sultan Azlan Shah. A separate wing displays the Sultan’s vehicles, including those which formed the royal motorcade when His Highness reigned as the King of Malaysia.

Teluk Intan Leaning Clock Tower
The town of Teluk Intan is mainly noted for its unusual leaning clock tower. This pagoda-like structure has a leftward slant and stands at 25.5m. It was built in 1885 and was originally used as a covered water tank.

Royal Belum
Covering a vast area of 117,500ha, the Royal Belum state park ranks second after Taman Negara. A wildlife haven, it possesses and immense wealth of flora and fauna which includes large mammals such as elephants, rhinoceros, tapir and tigers.

Taiping Lake Gardens & Taiping Zoo
Taiping Lake Gardens is the oldest and among the most beautiful in the country. The large lake, lush greenery and diverse flowering plants are its major attractions. Located within the area is the Taiping Zoo which houses local and exotic wildlife species in excellent surroundings.
It's open from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm daily, but you won't see many animals in the midday heat. Admission is RM2/4 for children/adults.

Bukit larut
Visitors can enjoy the refreshing cool air and breathtaking view of the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia at the summit (1035). A former tea plantation, Bukit Larut, also affectionately known as Maxwell Hill by locals, is the country’s oldest hill resort.

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary
The sanctuary is home to over 160 species of birds, including the rare Milky Stork and several types of migratory birds as well as a good variety of land and sea mammals.

Gua Tempurung
These ancient caves stretch over a kilometer from the south of Sungai Siput of Kuala Dipang and comprise of five domes with ceilings that resemble coconut shells with various formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

Sungai Klah Hot Spring
Relax and rejuvenate at the family baths as well as swimming and therapeutic pools which are reputed to have healing properties. Also available here are a garden, pebbled reflexology path and water reflexology courses.

Penang Hill

Getting There

Istana Maziah
Built with a hint of French architecture, the loyal palace was the official home of the previous state ruler. It is currently used for royal ceremonies and state receptions.

Pantai Kok has a few bars and restaurants but it's mainly a place to simply relax in the natural beauty of the beach and bay.

Pantai Cenang, Langkawi

Only 3 km from the Langkawi International Airport and about 25 km south-west of Kuah is the famous beach of Pantai Cenang where most of the beach chalets and resorts are located. It is a lively beach with a number of restaurants and bars offering good food and drinks. There are facilities for sailing, canoeing, snorkeling and fishing. You can also hire boats for island-hopping there. Opposite Pantai Cenang is the island of Pulau Rebak. At low tide, a sandbar allows visitors to walk to Pulau Rebak and view marine life caught in the tidal pools. Not far off is another island worth exploring called Pulau Tepor, which can be reached by a hired boat from Cenang Beach.

At the southern end of Pantai Cenang is another stretch of quieter beach known as Pantai Tengah which curves past a rocky point. There is less development here, but like Pantai Cenang, there are sailboats, catamarans and canoes for hire. Nearby is the Langkawi Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course which fronts the beach.

Teluk Datai (Datay Bay), Langkawi

Teluk Datai to the north-west of the island is way off the main road, but it has the most exclusive golf course on the island. There is a beach near the resort meant mainly for resort guests. There are several jungle trails that take you down to the sea. There is a crocodile farm on the way to Teluk Datai where visitors can view the crocodiles and be entertained by shows in the mornings and afternoons.

Tanjung Rhu, Langkawi

Tanjung Rhu lies on the northern cape of Langkawi. Aptly named for its abundance of casuarinas, its enchanting beach affords magnificent views of nearby islands, which can be reached at low tide on foot. Tanjung Rhu has one of Langkawi’s best beaches. The shallow water makes it fine for swimming, and a sandbank links it to a nearby rocky outcrop. The Gua Cerita, or Cave of Legends, is just around a promontory and can be reached by boats that are hired on the beach.

Some 2 km west of Tanjung Rhu is Pantai Pasir Hitam, a beach streaked with black sand. The black streaks are caused by the deposits of mineral oxides from a nearby spring. The sea in the area is dotted with large boulders. Along the beach is a jetty where fishing boats moor. Attractions include food and souvenir stalls that sell local crafts and trinkets.

HOW TO GET TO LANGKAWI

By Road

Visitors traveling by road have to drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the main take0off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is an additional hour away. Car parking facilities are available at both jetties.

By Air

The Langkawi International Airport (Phone: 04 955 1311) at Padang Matsirat is about 20 km from Kuah and 8 km from the beach resorts on Cenang Beach. Direct air services from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi are provided by Malaysia Airlines on a daily basis and budget airline AirAsia five times weekly. Malaysia Airlines also flies direct from Penang to Langkawi. Silk Air flies four times a week from Singapore to the island.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) or Malaysia Railway provides comfortable and economical rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star and Arau. From Alor Star or Arau, you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis respectively and then proceed by ferry to Langkawi.

Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis takes 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. The journey from Penang to Langkawi by ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
